Before I first visited Prof Ishaque I looked him up on Google, was suitably impressed by his credentials and thought he looked very jolly. When I first met him, I was not disappointed on either front: he is very knowledgeable, approachable, sympathetic and clearly understands backs. The scans Prof Ishaque organised clearly showed where the damage lay, and he explained fully how my arthritis has affected my back, nerves and range of movement. His surgical skills were apparent when he injected my back and relieved the more immediate nerve issues. His up-beat attitude to sorting out my problems left me feeling optimistic about being able to live a full life despite arthritic damage and, when it became clear to me I would have to manage my condition as the arthritis advanced, he gave me options and advice to help me do this. I will never be able to do all the things I used to, but I feel strongly that without Prof Ishaque’s timely interventions I would be living a much more restricted life, be in constant pain and have little idea about how to walk, bend, lift, sit, carry, move or exercise with minimal discomfort.
